A pirate ship is the centerpiece of this gallery, which explores Wilmington's unique geographic
location at the confluence of the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic ocean. At the newly designed,
double-decked (and wheelchair accessible) pirate ship visitors examine the provisions, study
the maps, learn to tie nautical knots, and puzzle through a series of locks.
Visitors can also play at the sandy beach, rake for oysters in the marsh, discover treasure
on the treasure island, navigate the dingy, load cargo at the Port of Wilmington tabletop
play table, role-play in the Port Office, and climb in the crow's nest for a bird's eye view.
At a deserted island visitors can pick oranges to bring back to the ship: important for
preventing scurvy. Yet, we didn't want to leave the ship littered with oranges, so we
installed a cannon on deck, which shoots the oranges back to the tree.
