The Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park on Long Island's North Shore is a former
Gold Coast estate of over four hundred acres, and one of Long Island's premier public
arboretums and historic sites.
Wondercabinet worked with staff from the Planting Fields Foundation, New York State Parks,
and the project architect to convert the historic Hay Barn building into a new Visitor
Center and to improve wayfinding and orientation throughout the estate.
The Visitor Center's exhibits interpret the arboretum's horticultural diversity, the estate's
history, and its landscape and architectural design. A topographic map with orientation
information helps visitors plan their visit, and includes peak blooming times for
plantings across all seasons. Children can play with hands-on interactives while
parents plan their visit. These interactives create context for a visit through
the arboretum's buildings and grounds.
