The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage renovated four historic trolley barns
into a cultural campus that includes a new museum. Our team first began working with
the Center as consultants on the architectural design, to identify key aspects of the
museum's exhibition space needs. We then developed an Interpretive Master Plan and the
subsequent exhibit design, which uses the museum's thematic metaphor of "One More River
to Cross" as a unifying thread for telling the numerous stories.
Both physically and metaphorically, the story of African Americans in Kentucky is a
recurring tale of crossing rivers. Within this framework, we designed exhibits to
interpret an enormous range of stories of African Americans in Kentucky emphasizing
stories of perseverance, courage and vision. The immersive, thoughtful exhibits will
take visitors through this ongoing journey towards equality, a journey of many
"rivers to cross."
