Farm Tour of McClean County, Illinois, 2005
Have you ever visited a dairy farm with not one, but two quarter-mile long barns? Have you ever driven a tractor so
large the tires are taller than you are? Have you ever ridden a humongous combine through a field watching the bunnies
hop away for dear life? Have you ever stood for 45 minutes in a state of near-faint by the excretment tanks of a pig farm?
Well, not to rub it in, but we have.
When we began working with the truly fantastic team at the Children's Discovery Museum in Normal, Illinois on their
agriculture exhibit Agmazing!, they arranged for Sari and Neal to take a two day farm tour of McClean County,
accompanied by several local farmers and reps from the county farm bureau. We went to the largest dairy farm
in the county, the one with the quarter-mile long barns, and also to a dairy farm with just over 30 cows,
run by three generations of a family. We saw supercute little piglets and enormous grain elevators.
We were also very mindful of the dangers of farming, as evidenced by the farm equipment warning stickers.
