The Bunker Hill Museum Opening Ceremony, 2007
There was pomp. A whole hill of pomp, and a dash of circumstance. With the monument flanked by
Revolutionary War re-enactors and numerous dignitaries, the ceremony for the Bunker Hill Museum
commenced. Joining the National Park Service and Wondercabinet teams on the hill were Boston
Mayor Thomas Menino, the French Consul General, the British Deputy Consul General, and the
Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts (the oldest chartered military
organization in the U.S.).
On the unseasonably blustery June day, the French Consul General proved that we can always
count on the French for their pithy observations, when he remarked "The wind is blowing upon
us like the spirit of liberty and freedom today."
The Freemasons, who provided funding for the museum, are the brotherly descendents of Bunker Hill
fallen patriot Dr. Joseph Warren and the Sons of Liberty. Fittingly, they concluded the event
with a Masonic ceremony and the presentation of a cornerstone for the new museum.
